A simple unlined tote bag is the easiest bag for most beginners. It's mostly straight seams, a few rectangles and one set of handles, and you end up with something you'll use. If you want something even simpler, a drawstring bag skips handles and hardware, but it's less versatile.
Why a basic tote works
A first bag should teach you a few core skills without piling on new ones. A basic tote gives you straight stitching, pressing, topstitching and attaching handles. There's no zipper, lining or curved seam to fight with.
Easy bag styles compared
| Bag style | Skills involved | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Drawstring bag | Straight seams, a casing | Easiest of the three, but it doesn't hold its shape or carry heavy loads well |
| Unlined tote | Straight seams, hemming, attaching handles | Raw inside seams need finishing, and handles take care to reinforce |
| Lined tote | All of the above, plus joining lining and outer bag | A neater result, but turning and closing the lining is fiddly the first time |
| Zipper pouch | Zipper installation | Small and quick, but the zipper is a new skill for many beginners |
Choosing fabric and pattern
- Fabric: Start with a stable woven, like medium-weight canvas, duck cloth or quilting cotton. Slippery, stretchy or very thick fabrics make a first bag harder.
- Pattern: Look for clear diagrams, a cutting layout and instructions for reinforcing the handles. A pattern with a video or photo tutorial helps if you're learning solo.
- Handles: Stitching them in a box with an X is a common way to make them stronger. Heavy loads put stress on the seams, so don't skimp here.
- Needle and thread: Match the needle to the fabric weight. Canvas usually needs a sturdier needle than quilting cotton, so check your machine manual if you're unsure.
When to skip the basic tote
If you'd rather learn on something other than a bag, simple pajama pants or an easy skirt teach many of the same straight-seam skills. A backpack is a fair step up in complexity, so save it for later.
